Całkiem niespodziewanie okazało się, iż przy okazji robienia porządków z zaniedbanym od lat placem naprzeciwko budynku Szpitala Wojewódzkiego przy ul. Żołnierskiej powstanie nowy fragment drogi rowerowej.
Za inwestycję odpowiada Zarząd Zieleni Miejskiej. W tym roku powstanie odcinek nowej drogi rowerowej rozpoczynający się przy jezdni ul. Żołnierskiej, który jednak
nie zostanie dowiązany do już istniejącej ścieżki
prowadzącej przy osiedlowym placu zabaw do parkingu na tyłach Hali Urania (przy lodowisku). Na kilka zimowych miesięcy zabraknie tego połączenia, jednak na wniosek Oficera Rowerowego
Zarząd Zieleni Miejskiej zapowiedział uzupełnienie brakującego odcinka
(około 60 metrów) z nowego budżetu w 2013 roku. Jest to także dobra wiadomość dla pieszych, ponieważ aktualny stan tego chodnika jest tragiczny.
Powstająca droga rowerowa ma nawierzchnię wykonaną z bezfazowej kostki betonowej, co stanowi wyjątek od zapowiadanej i wdrażanej w Olsztynie reguły stosowania nawierzchni bitumicznych ("asfaltowych"), a jest to spowodowane koniecznością nawiązania do już istniejącej nawierzchni oraz niewielkim zakresem robót.
Opisywany odcinek ma swoje uzasadnienie w olsztyńskim Programie Budowy Dróg Rowerowych:
A tak tworzony odcinek wygląda w otoczeniu licznych bloków, które z pewnością wygenerują tu znaczny ruch:
